As the world grapples with the transition to clean energy, one non-profit is leading the way by providing open-source software that allows companies to establish secure distributed computing networks for sensitive business operations.
The Energy Web ecosystem comprises leading utilities, renewable energy developers, grid operators, corporate energy buyers, automotive, internet-of-things, telecommunications leaders, and more. Their most recent release, the Energy Web Worker Node toolkit, is helping companies establish secure distributed computing networks that perform sensitive business operations.
While it is crucial to have accurate and publicly verifiable results, commercial data such as granular renewable energy production and electricity demand must remain private. Worker Nodes solve this challenge by allowing organizations to share information without compromising data privacy.
Allowing Exchange of Critical Operational Data
The Energy Web Worker Node toolkit enables companies to set up and manage distributed computing networks that process data from external sources, execute custom workflows based on business logic, and establish consensus without revealing or modifying the underlying data.
The Worker Nodes use blockchain technology to ensure that stakeholders receive cryptographic proof that mutually agreed rules and processes are being followed correctly. This guarantees that computational outputs are accurate and data privacy is maintained for auditing purposes.
Worker Nodes are currently being used for several energy solutions in the Energy Web ecosystem, including 24/7 renewable energy accounting, coordinating the dispatch of distributed energy resources, and allowing exchange of critical operational data for market actors.

The Worker Node repository is available on Github and includes a smart contract and basic Worker Node template based on a 24/7 renewable energy matching application. A user-friendly version of the toolkit is in development, as well as a new public blockchain for governing and securing Worker Node networks.
Ensuring Data Privacy and Security
The Green Proofs smart contract, a part of the Worker Node Toolkit, has recently been audited by blockchain security auditor Hacken and received a 10/10 rating, the highest standard for blockchain security.
The Energy Web Worker Node toolkit is a powerful technology that enables companies to exchange and process data from millions of people, businesses, and clean energy assets while ensuring data privacy and security.
According to Jesse Morris, CEO of Energy Web, Worker Nodes are “the single most powerful Web 3 technology for enterprise that I have encountered to date.”
Energy Web is a nonprofit organization that aims to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon, decentralized energy system. They achieve this goal by providing open-source software solutions for the energy sector, particularly in the areas of blockchain and other decentralized technologies.
The Energy Web ecosystem comprises leading utilities, renewable energy developers, grid operators, corporate energy buyers, automotive, internet-of-things, telecommunications leaders, and more.
